Tom Joad

In these high tech days there’s still space and time for the low tech options. I refuse to use a laptop whilst on the bog and it’s downright dangerous in the bath. Sometimes all you need is a book.

So I’ve just started a classic, The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. I was attracted to it after hearing a radio show by Billy Bragg about Woody Guthrie. Woody condensed the whole 500 pages or so down into the Ballad of Tom Joad in two parts each about 3 minutes long. I’ve long been a fan of the song which complements the book perfectly. You’d think there might be a lot of filler if it can be condensed to around 6 minutes. There’s not. It is beautifully constructed. That fella sure can write.
